Oversee your organization's performance reviews

Available for the following plans: Plus, Unlimited HR, Engage, Elite, Unlimited HR+Payroll,

The Performance Reviews feature provides a centralized platform to oversee employee development and professional growth within your organization. As a manager or admin, you can design review templates, initiate specific review periods, and provide direct feedback to your team members. This tool also allows you to track progress through next steps and export data for offline record-keeping.

This article shows you how to handle the following:

Create and use review templates

Build a new review template
  1. Log in to Employment Hero.
  2. Click the Performance icon on the left-hand side menu.
  3. Click the Performance Reviews option.
  4. Click the Review Templates tab.
  5. Click the + Create Review Template button.
  6. Add the following details:
    • Template name
    • Description (optional)
    • Questions
    • Settings

Helpful Hint

In the Questions section, you can either type in your own custom question in the + Add new question field, or click in the same field and choose a question category to add from the pre-existing options.

  1. Click Publish template.
Start a review using an existing template
  1. Navigate to the Review Templates tab under Performance Reviews.
  2. Find the template you want and click the Use template button.
  3. In the General Settings and Dates screen, add the following:
    • Name
    • Description (optional)
    • Upload files (optional)
    • Review type (dates and duration or continuous)
    • Dates and duration
  4. Click Next.
  5. In the Questions screen, confirm the template and choose if you want to include weighted questions or an overall score.
  6. Click Next.
  7. In the Participants screen, select the employees to be reviewed and assign their reviewers.
  8. Click Create Review Period.

Set up and edit review periods

Initiate a new review period
  1. Go to Performance and select Performance Reviews.
  2. Click the Review Periods tab.
  3. Click the + Create new period button.
  4. In the General Settings and Dates screen, add the details including name, description, and review type.

Helpful Hint

The review type, start date, employee/reviewer end dates, and lockout dates are key to adding the new review period correctly.

  1. Click Next.
  2. Follow the prompts to select your template and participants, then click Create Review Period.
Modify an existing review period
  1. On the Review Periods tab, locate the period you want to change.
  2. Click the three dots icon and select View Details.
  3. Update the settings or dates in the General Settings screen.
  4. Click Next through the screens and click Create Review Period to save.

Submit feedback for an employee

Write and publish a management review

Important

You can only publish management reviews that are currently in the drafting stage.

  1. Navigate to Performance Reviews and click the Review Periods tab.
  2. Click the desired review period.
  3. Click the Assigned to me tab.
  4. Click the employee whose review you are completing.
  5. Complete your review fields.
  6. Click the Publish button.

Helpful Hint

You can only publish a review once you answer all available questions. The platform highlights completed answers in green and automatically saves your progress as you work.

Revise a draft or unpublish a review

Important

You can only unpublish reviews that have already been published. You can only edit reviews that are still in the drafting stage.

  1. Locate the employee in the Assigned to me tab.
  2. To edit, make your changes and click Publish or Save as Draft.
  3. To unpublish, click on the employee and select the Unpublish button.

Track employee development goals

Assign next steps to an employee

Identify specific action items after a review to support employee development and ensure continuous improvement.

  1. Within the desired review period, go to the Assigned to Me tab.
  2. Click on the relevant employee.
  3. Click Create and View next steps.
  4. Click the Create button.
  5. Choose between a task or a goal.
  6. Complete the required fields and click the Save button.
Monitor progress on assigned tasks
  1. From the Assigned to me tab, select the employee.
  2. Click the Next Steps box.
  3. Select the specific step you wish to view to see the employee's progress.

Perform administrative review actions

Send reminders to participants

Important

You can only send reminders to employees who have not yet completed their reviews.

  • Individual: On the Assigned to me tab, click the Actions dropdown and select Remind.
  • Bulk: Click the Remind All button on the Assigned to me tab.
Filter and manage review periods
  1. Navigate to the Performance Reviews page.
  2. Click the Filter search button to search by review period name.
  3. Click the Date filter field and set the date range.
  4. Select the Archived option to include archived review periods.

Helpful Hint

Click the Reset button and then the Filter button to view all reviews again.

Export review data
  • Download CSV: Click the Download CSV button on the Assigned to me tab to get a summary of all reviews.
  • Print Individual: Select an employee and click the Print button.

Important

If a new tab does not open when printing, ensure your browser allows pop-ups for Employment Hero.

Update reviewers for a period
  1. Locate the review period in the Review Periods tab.
  2. Click the three dots and select View Details.
  3. Navigate to the Participants screen and scroll to the bottom.
  4. Click in the reviewer field for the specific employee and type the name of the extra reviewer.
  5. Click Update review period.

Review recent feature changes

Identify functional improvements from February 2026
Streamlined Access Access all review features via Performance > Performance Reviews. Other access paths have been removed for simplicity.
Unified Setup Create templates and review periods simultaneously without jumping between different menu items.
On-the-fly Questions Add custom questions directly while building a new template instead of pre-configuring them in settings.
Flexible Reviewers Assign any employee as a reviewer. The primary manager is default, but you can now remove them and add anyone else.
Consistent Views Employees and managers use the same interface for manager reviews via the My Reviews and Review Periods tabs.
Adjust performance review visibility

You can control who can see performance reviews by adjusting permissions in Settings > Custom Security Settings > Other Permissions > Performance Review Settings/Performance Review Responses.
