How to add and manage Leave Categories by Hero Academy Training

Leave categories are the means through which your employees submit time off against a pre-defined category. The Leave Category feature allows you to create a new leave category, determine what type it will fall under, choose a payment setup, and what leave loading rates will apply. This feature also allows you to edit any of the information if it changes and delete a category if it is no longer relevant.

If you are a HR+PY connected client, from October 2023, you will be notified about our new integrated feature where HR will be your source of truth for all Leave settings. If you have been migrated to the new platform, then the article you need for leave management is: How do I manage leave?

FAQs

My organisation has an unpaid leave category that does not require a balance but we would still like employees to be able to apply for it. How do I set this up?

Some types of leave do not accrue in the usual way, e.g. leave without pay, so it might not make sense for an employee to have a balance. In these cases you can set the Employee Leave Balance value, on the Leave Category settings page, to Not tracked. This will tell the platform, it does not need to keep track of how much leave an employee is entitled to for this category.

Am I able to cap leave accrual at a certain number of hours per year?

Yes, you can! You can manage this via the Leave Category settings page by changing the value in the Accruals for this Leave category Are field from Not Limited to Limited to x Amount. The following options will depend on whether the leave type is accruing on an ongoing basis or per leave year. However, you will be able to establish the cap as well as any applicable Balance Carry-over options.
