Common HMRC error codes

Overview

This article covers several of the common error codes we have identified that can cause an HMRC submission to fail.

Error: Code 1000 - System failure. The submission of this document has failed due to an internal system error.

The cause of this error usually means that the HMRC's website currently has an issue. To resolve the error, we recommend you wait and try your lodgement later, or if it keeps occurring, you can contact the HMRC directly.

Error: 1046 - Authentication Failure. The supplied user credentials failed validation for the requested service.

The cause of this error can come from entering an incorrect username and/or password for the HMRC gateway. Make sure that your HMRC username and password are correct and try re-submitting your Full Payment Summary again. To read further information on how to set up your HMRC settings, you can refer to the following article.

Another cause can stem form entering incorrect PAYE reference entries. We recommend, if your username and password are correct, that you check that you have not entered your PAYE details incorrectly.

If neither of these solutions solve your error, you may have only recently activated your new ID and password and sometimes it may take a couple of weeks for the HMRC to activate them across their platform. If the problem persists then you will need to contact HMRC directly.
