When exporting payroll reports, you can now display the full hierarchy path of each cost centre. This makes it easier to reconcile payroll data with your accounting structure, helping you see exactly which entity, department, or team a cost centre belongs to—without manual cross-referencing.
This article explains how to:
Show the full cost centre hierarchy in payroll report exports
This section covers how to enable and customise the display of full cost centre paths in your payroll report exports.
Click here for a step-by-step guide
- Log in to Employment Hero Payroll.
- Go to Business Settings in the left-hand side navigation menu.
- Click on Business Details.
- Find and turn on the Show full cost centre path in exports toggle.
- In the Path separator field, enter your preferred separator (the default is > ). The separator can be up to 10 characters long and cannot be left empty. This is an optional step.
- Click Save. If there is an error (such as an empty or too-long separator), correct the field and try saving again.
- Once enabled, go to your desired payroll report (for example, Pay Run Audit Report, Payroll Tax Report, Costing Report, Pay Run Variance Report, Detailed Activity Report, Detailed File Export, or NZ KiwiSaver Report).
- Export the report as CSV or Excel. The cost centre column will now show the full hierarchy path using your chosen separator. If a cost centre has no parent, only its name will appear.

What happens if I turn off the full path setting?
If you turn off the setting, payroll report exports will show only the leaf-level cost centre name, as before.
What if I enter an invalid separator?
The separator field cannot be empty and is limited to 10 characters. If you enter an invalid value, you will see an error and must correct it before saving.
