This guide provides essential information regarding superannuation stapling requirements in Australia. It explains your obligations as an employer and how the Employment Hero platform assists you in remaining compliant with the latest legislative changes for 2026.
What is superannuation?
Superannuation (or ‘super’) is a compulsory system where employers pay a percentage of an employee's salary into a nominated fund to provide income for retirement. As of 1 July 2025, the Super Guarantee (SG) rate is 12% of an eligible worker's ordinary time earnings. This money is invested by the fund to grow over time, with restricted access until retirement.
What is Super Stapling?
Super stapling is an Australian government initiative (effective since 1 November 2021) that "staples" an employee's existing superannuation fund to them as they move between jobs.
The goal is twofold:
- To ensure the same fund follows an employee throughout their career.
- To reduce the creation of multiple accounts, which lead to unnecessary fees and lost insurance premiums that can eat away at retirement savings.
What is changing?
Recent legislative changes are intended to improve employee choice while maintaining existing employer onboarding obligations.
From 1 July 2026, there is a requirement that new employees must be shown information about their existing super fund during the onboarding flow (if they have one), alongside information about any alternative funds. This helps prevent employees from unintentionally opening new super accounts.
Key Dates
- 8 May 2026: Launch of the updated stapling flow within the Employment Hero platform.
- 1 July 2026: Official effective date for the new legislation.
Your requirements as an employer
In order for Employment Hero to automatically find an employee's existing stapled account via API, you must assign Employment Hero as an appointed business to access ATO Online Services on your behalf.
- Log in to the ATO Access Manager.
- Appoint Employment Hero HR Pty Ltd (ABN:
11 160 047 709). - Grant Employee Commencement Form (ECF) permissions.
Helpful Hint
When searching for our ABN, you may see the name Webscale Pty Ltd. This was Employment Hero’s previous legal name. As long as the ABN matches 11 160 047 709, you are appointing the correct organisation.
