Sync error: "Cannot remove cost centre as employee has upcoming roster shifts here"

Available for the following plans: Standard, Premium, Platinum, Unlimited
Available for the following user access levels: Admin

Have you run into a message saying, "Cannot remove cost centre as employee has upcoming roster shifts here"? Don't worry, it's a quick fix!

This usually happens because the system is trying to update or remove a cost centre, but some employees are still scheduled to work shifts linked to it.

To clear this error, you can choose one of these simple solutions:

  1. Add that specific cost centre back to the employee's profile

  2. Edit the upcoming shifts in Payroll, to reflect one of the employee's current Cost Centres (Locations)

  3. Delete upcoming roster shifts in Payroll

Click below to learn how to do each of these options.

Getting started

Add the cost centre to the employee profile

If the cost centre was removed by mistake, adding it back to the employee's profile will resolve the sync block.

  1. To add a cost centre to an employee profile in Employment Hero, go to the employee's profile (People > People List > Click on the employee's name) and navigate to the Employment Details tab.

  2. Click the pencil icon (Edit) on the Employment Details section.

  3. In the modal, you'll see fields for Primary Cost Centre and Additional Cost Centres. cost-centres.png

  4. Select the appropriate cost centre(s) from the dropdown, this list pulls from the cost centres already configured for your organisation in Payroll.

  5. Click Save to apply the changes.

Each employee can have one Primary Cost Centre and optionally one or more Additional Cost Centres. The primary cost centre is used to automatically allocate payroll expenses, leave costs, and timesheet earnings to the correct cost bucket for reporting.

Note: The cost centres available in the dropdown are managed in Payroll Settings. If the cost centre you need doesn't appear, an Admin/Owner will need to create it first under Payroll Settings > Cost Centres by clicking Add Cost Centre and filling in the required fields (name, parent cost centre).

Edit upcoming shifts in Payroll to reflect one of the employee's current Cost Centres (Locations)

If the employee should no longer be associated with that cost centre, you can update their scheduled shifts to reflect a valid location.

  1. Navigate to Time > Rostering Management

  2. Click the pencil icon on the shift you want to edit — this opens the "Edit a shift" panel

  3. Make your changes to the Work site using the dropdown menu.

  4. Click Publish.

Delete upcoming roster shifts in Payroll

If the upcoming shifts are no longer required, deleting them entirely will clear the synchronization roadblock.

  1. Go to Time > Rostering Management

  2. If the shift is published, click on the pencil icon to unpublish it.

  3. Then click on the shift you want to delete and click the Delete 1 draft button. delete-shift.png

  4. Confirm the deletion when prompted.

Maintain

To avoid this error in the future, please make sure that all upcoming rostered shifts are either cleared or updated to a new active location before unassigning or removing a cost centre from an employee's profile.
