The Interview Employment Hero candidates for free feature automatically sends AI video interview invitations to qualifying Employment Hero (EH) candidates as they apply — before you've reviewed them manually. All AI video interviews with EH candidates are free and don't consume any AI credits, whether sent automatically or by you.
The result: EH candidates arrive in your pipeline already screened and ready to action.
Automate Free AI Video Interviews for Employment Hero candidates
When setting up the AI Interviewer on a stage for the first time, the control appears as a checkbox inside the AI Interviewer setup panel.
- Click the Recruitment menu, then click the Recruitment submenu.
- Click the job you'd like to configure.
- Click the ... button in the top right corner of the job card.
- Click Edit hiring process.
- Select the stage where you want to enable the AI Interviewer — for example, Phone Screen or In Review.
- In the AI Interviewer setup panel, tick Interview Employment Hero candidates for free.
- Click Enable AI Interviewer. The AI Interviewer activates immediately, and auto-invites will start firing for qualifying EH candidates.
You can also enable the AI Notetaker from this page. When turned on, it joins your scheduled interviews for candidates in this stage, records the conversation, and generates a transcript with AI notes.
Once the AI Interviewer is active, the control becomes a toggle at the bottom of the stage configuration, below the interview questions and the green "Video interviews enabled" banner.
- Click the Recruitment menu, then click the Recruitment submenu.
- Click the job you'd like to configure.
- Click the ... button in the top right corner of the job card.
- Click Edit hiring process.
- Select the stage where the AI Interviewer is active.
- Scroll to the Interview Employment Hero candidates for free toggle and switch it on.
- A success notification confirms your change was saved.
- Click Continue to candidates to return to the candidate list, or continue configuring the stage as needed.
To turn the feature off at any time, return to this page and toggle it off. This stops future auto-invites but does not affect invitations already sent — those candidates can still complete their interviews.
To turn off the AI Interviewer for the stage entirely, click Disable video interviews at the bottom of the page. This removes the AI Interviewer from the stage and stops all auto-invites.
How it works
When the feature is enabled, the system automatically sends AI video interview invitations to qualifying EH candidates as soon as they apply — up to 5 per job, first come first served. No recruiter action is needed.
All AI video interviews with EH candidates are free while the toggle is on — whether the invite was sent automatically or by you. Your available credit balance won't decrease as a result of these interviews.
Once an invite has been sent, the candidate's card in the New stage shows Interview invitation sent (Free) so you can identify free interviews at a glance.
EH candidate interviews count in all standard interview metrics — completion rate, response rate, scored evaluations — the same as any other interview. They are only "free" in terms of credits.

Auto-invites are sent to EH-sourced candidates who meet all of the following:
- All must-have criteria for the role
- All preferred answers to screening questions (if any are configured)
Which candidates are EH-sourced?
Candidates who entered the pipeline via any of the following sources are considered EH-sourced and are eligible for free interviews:
- SmartMatch Direct Application
- Direct application
- Swag Jobs Referral
- Shortlisted from Saved candidate
- Referral (via careers page)
- Talent Search
- Send job to candidate
- SmartMatch – Auto add to new job
Interest required for some sources: Candidates sourced via Talent Search, Send job to candidate, or SmartMatch – Auto add to new job must have also expressed interest (thumbed up on the job) before they are eligible for an auto-invite. Candidates from the other five sources are eligible based on must-have criteria and preferred screening answers alone.
Auto-invite cap: A maximum of 5 auto-invites will be sent per job. After that, you can still manually invite additional EH candidates — also at no credit cost while the toggle is on.
After an auto-invite or manual free invite has been sent, the candidate's card in the New stage shows:
✨ Interview invitation sent (Free)
This label only appears for EH-sourced candidates invited while the toggle is on. Non-EH candidates, and EH candidates invited while the toggle is off, show "Interview invitation sent" without the "(Free)" suffix.
While the toggle is enabled:
- EH candidate interviews do not consume AI credits, whether auto-invited or manually invited.
- Your available credit balance won't decrease as a result of these interviews.
- You won't receive "out of credits" notifications triggered by EH candidate interviews.
- If your credit balance is at zero, EH candidates can still complete their interviews without interruption.
- EH interviews are tracked for billing transparency but are not charged on your invoice.

Auto-invited candidates receive an invitation email with different wording to the standard invitation. Because no recruiter has reviewed them yet, the copy reflects this accurately rather than implying the candidate has already been shortlisted.

The rest of the invitation — what to expect, the interview link, the deadline — is the same for both. Candidates you manually invite, including manually invited EH candidates, always receive the standard "shortlisted" copy.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. Turning the toggle off stops future auto-invites but doesn't affect invitations already sent. Those candidates can still complete their interviews, and those interviews remain free.
After the auto-invite cap of 5 is reached, you can still manually invite additional EH candidates. While the toggle is on, those manual invitations are also free.
No. Candidates you manually move to the AI Interviewer stage still follow the standard flow, including the standard "shortlisted" invitation copy. The "Interview EH candidates for free" feature runs in parallel and doesn't change anything for those candidates.
Yes. EH candidate interviews are counted in all metrics — completion rate, response rate, scored evaluations — the same as any other interview. Only the credit cost is different.
